About Dr. Espinola

Dr. Maria Espinola is a leading expert in the areas of trauma psychology, multicultural psychology, and the psychology of women. Dr. Espinola has provided multilingual psychological services (therapeutic services and psychological evaluations) to thousands of victims of trauma from all over the world. She has worked with survivors of child abuse, intimate partner violence, community violence, organized sexual exploitation, hate crimes, armed conflict, torture, and political violence.

Dr. Espinola earned her doctorate in clinical psychology at Nova Southeastern University. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology at Boston University Medical Center and her post-doctoral fellowship in women's psychology and trauma psychology at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. While completing her doctoral training, Dr. Espinola worked under the mentorship of Dr. Lenore Walker (the author of the “Battered Woman Syndrome”), and focused on providing services to female victims of domestic violence, sexual assaults, and sex trafficking. After arriving to Ohio, Dr. Espinola worked for three years for an Ohio Supreme Court-certified specialty docket. In this role, she evaluated and treated victims of sex trafficking who were under court-supervision. Dr. Espinola has also participated in Ohio Supreme Court Roundtables and has spoken at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to help judges, legislators, and advocates understand the specific circumstances of trafficking victims, including immigrants’ vulnerability to exploitation.
